May 27th, 2010

Listing your business online is vitally important to creating inbound backlinks and traffic to your website by allowing hundreds and thousands of potential customers access to your business information, much like in the old days of the paper phone book and yellow pages.   You can certainly search for free business directories but, in my opinion, UBL is by far the best value of all directory services for listing your business on the internet.   What I mean by “value” is that you pay a modest $30 annual fee but save hours of time by having your site submitted to hundreds of reputable business directories several of which would cost you money if you found them on your own.

I use it myself and strongly suggest you do the same.

The modest annual $30 fee allows you to:

Link for determining “pagerank”

May 23rd, 2010

Google determines your PR or “page rank” (scored 1-10) through a number of factors including the age of your website, number of backlinks to your site, the quality or relevance of those sites linking to yours, and also the actual page rank of those sites linking to yours. In other words, the PR is more or less a quantitative measurement of your SEO in relation to competing sites.

Quality backlinks could include links from reputable article directories or sites, forums, and blogs related to your site. Reputable directories, such as a directory of chiropractors pointing to a specific chiropractic site, are also of high quality. “Spammy” backlinks from unrelated sites and link farms can actually hurt your page ranking.

Remember, you can’t change the age of your site however you can increase the number of quality backlinks to it. Even the most popular sites promoting products nationally or worldwide in certain industries have a page ranking of only 5 (pr5) so I would recommend comparing your pagerank against your competitors for a more realistic representation.

My experience shows me that local businesses competing against only other local businesses really shouldn’t worry about page rank scores much at all. However, whether you’re a local, regional, national, or worldwide business, the pagerank tool can also be quite valuable in checking the pagerank of sites you are seeking backlinks from.

Page Rank (PR) for the online business directories, blogs, and social bookmarking directories is worth paying attention to because the higher the PR the more power or “link juice” you gain through the backlink created to your site within that directory.

The easiest way to view page ranks is to use “SEO Quake” within the Mozilla Firefox web browser. To install, simply go to “Tools” then “Add-Ons” – then search for SEOquake or SEO Quake. The install takes just a few seconds then you’re off to the races.

The tool below also determines your page ranking. Note note that you will be directed away from my blog, so make sure to bookmark my blog first.

Eight Easy Tips for Obtaining Repeat Visitors

May 9th, 2010

Sometimes the most important and most obvious aspect of your site’s marketability is forgotton – you need visitors that turn into repeat visitors and, of course, buyers.  Some refer to this concept as creating a “sticky website.”  Here is what I recommend….

Offer subscriptions via RSS and Email Autoresponder which we discuss in more detail in another post.

-Offer periodic promotions or coupons.
-Offer an informative newsletter available by free subscription.
-Create a blog and make sure to have an RSS feed to it.

Keep plenty of whitespace and use images judiciously making your page
easier on the eye.
Put hottest keywords in content at or near top of each page.

Use catchy headlines such as “Finally, Gluten Free Foods that are
Delicious!”  It goes without saying that headlines should all include primary keywords.

-Along with that, offer a poll to rate a certain aspect of your product
or business.   For example, ask what the favorite new recipe was out
a group of five new recipes.

Keep the same look and feel throughout the site to maintain brand consistency and make sure there are links to each page on each page in the navigation bar.

Be interactive by offering the ability to comment and be recognized.

-Solicit suggestions from customers via web form or blog commenting.
-Recognize most recent or top commenters (WordPress offers a plug-in
  for this).
-Have a contest best idea (ie/ recipe, t-shirt design) and recognize winners.

Offer links to social media such as Facebook, You Tube, and Twitter.

Update your content regularly and create anticipation with “stay tuned for…” type messages

-ie/ new recipes
-ie /new coupons or products
-ie/the second half of a story or article

This may sound obvious, but make sure your content is interesting and enticing.  The term “content is king” is probably the most important to remember. An attractive looking site with mediocre content won’t elicit return visitors.  Give your visitors a good reason to return!
